London Volksfest

North Weald Airfield
1st August 2004

With the London Volksfest being held at North Weald Airfield it is considered to be our local show and with that in mind we really wanted to have our very own club stand and show off some of our cars and the J29 name. With the location of our monthly meet being only a few miles down the road we also expected to get some interest from potential new attendees.
We had arranged to meet up at the White Horse pub, which is just along the A414 in Chelmsford at about 8am, and when I arrived at 7.50am the car park was already rammed full of dubs. We waited until 8.30am for any late arrivals then set off in convoy to North Weald. We met up with Haddy and Steve along the way and all arrived at North Weald at about 9.15am. There was already a fairly long queue to get in and the main car park looked virtually full so we were glad to be parking up together in the main club area. Don’t forget that London Volksfest is a fairly small show so for the turnout to be like this was quite an achievement for the organisers!
Once were all parked up in position in the club area and everyone and finished cleaning and polishing their cars ready for the passing public to admire we went for a wander to see what was at the show. There was a great turnout with a good mix of both air-cooled and water-cooled cars on show and the Show and Shine attracted a lot of entrants including Justin’s Betty and Paul’s MK4 Golf with Justin eventually making it in to the top 10 water cooled cars and winning a trophy!! There was also a fair amount of trade stands and auto jumble stalls selling a good selection of water and air cooled motor parts though there seemed to be less than previous year's.
Throughout the day, the visitors were kept entertained by the music and mindless waffle of the now-infamous Jensen D. Groover on the show radio... Later on the screaming sounds of motorbikes ripped though the air as Eddie Kidd put on a spectacular stunt show for the gathered crowds. Plumes of tyre smoke poured from the bike as he skidded round the enclosure, showing the masterful comtrol that has made him so well known.
Overall I had a great day, the weather was good, the show had a great friendly atmosphere and it was great to have our own stand there with so many J29 regulars turning out for it. I cant wait for next year’s event!!
